There are so many beautiful ones out there. I love Snapdragons, daffodils, gut here in Arizona I was able to grow two night-blooming flowers.
One is the Night-blooming Cereus Cactus flower. It gives off a pungently sweet aroma, only blooms in the solstice of Summer, is spectacular and beautiful. It stays open for only one night, then bloses as the sun rises.
The other is the Moonflower. It also opens at night, for only one night, and gives off a very similar fragrance.
They are both white and gorgeous. :-)

I can't hav pets, so what's a good plant that could substitute?
Where I live, I can't have pets. My parents are divorced and I am often shuffled from one house to another. I would need a plant that is easily transported, and cared for. I live in Southern California so sunlight isn't a problem. I was thinking a night blooming cereus because they are very interesting but I know that they get really big sometimes. Please help, thank you.

The Home Depot is selling Venus Flytraps which would be a great pet substitute. They articulate and you have to feed them, they won't make a mess and are easy to transport.

It doesn't get out of hand if you keep it trimmed to about 6" long stems, and what you trim off you can use in the kitchen. AND...it comes in many many varieties. I've never successfully grown it from seed, but the plants I have bought at the Home Depot years ago are still going.

My neighbour has just finished photographing the night blooming cactus (cereus) and he called me to watch the session and assist him. Two opened last night but I missed them.Another two opened tonight; and one may open while I am sleeping or wait to be photographed alone. There were nine buds.Two did not flower and I have lost track of two. As an inside plant, it is kept under very good care. This plant is not very spindly and approx. 12 feet high. I understood these plants bloom normally, once a year, and with just one bud...making 40 seem ridiculous. Any information on this plant would be appreciated.

Each bloom only lasts one night, but it is capable of producing a lot of blooms each year. Very fragrant!

Mine is 6 years old and has never bloomed. I am not sure of the type of soil, moisture level, lighting or fertilizing. I understand that their bloom measures 8 to 12 inches in diameter, lasting only about 6 hours, emitting a vanilla-like perfume.

Native night bloomers usually grow under the protection of Arizona desert trees. It likes semi shade, but will adapt to full sun, but may tend to sunburn in the summertime. It will grow in a big pot, or you can plant it in the native soil with a little mulch mixed in. Make sure that where ever you plant it that it has good drainage, you don't want to rot it's tubor type root. Water once per week in the summer, once per month in the winter. No fertilizer needed.

What do you think is wrong with my Night Blooming Cereus?
It has been fine for a year and a half, and it just started turning yellow lately, first at the tips of the leaves, but it's working it's way back. I have been watering it and the waiting until the pot is dry until I water it next, so I don't think it is rot. It is inside near a large window, and only gets sunlight half of the day. Do you think that could be the problem?

'Night-Blooming Cereus' does not form flower buds indoors as well as it does when it is placed outdoors. Therefore, it is a good thing to grow them in a pot. Move your plant outdoors when temperatures are above 45 degrees, depending on where you live, and it will have a greater chance of producing flower buds. Make sure you place it in a partly shaded and sheltered region of your home away from windy areas to prevent the stems from snapping off.
'Night-Blooming Cereus' will not tolerate high temperatures and direct sunlight, and it will inevitably dry out and shrivel up. Keep it well-watered and provide excellent drainage. When temperatures drop to below 45 degress, move it indoors where the frost will not kill it. During this time, the plant stops growth to store energy for next year's display. There is not much need to fertilize 'Night-Blooming Cereus' as it does well with normal water.

What potting soil to use with a night blooming cereus?
I just got a cutting in the mail and don't know whether or not to use an epiphytic orchid soil (i.e.bark) or a cactus sand. This actually isn't a cereus. It is technically an "Epiphyllum oxypetalum." Most people know it though as a night blooming cereus.

Since epiphyllums grow in the crotch of trees, they like a soil miix with a lot of leafmold in it. Do not use an epiphytic orchid soil or cactus sand. You can make you own with a good potting soil and a lot of clean, well aged compost, and maybe 10% sand for good drainage, but not too much, as epiphytes' roots should never completely dry out.
I've always had several growing, including one given to me by a woman who had it for 25 years without it ever blooming. I've had it for twenty with not better luck, but a friend has one he's shaped into a tree and he gets 25-40 flowers every year. The night blooming cereus is the jungle variety from which the hybrid epiphyllums were developed.

I repotted into a 14" pot last year using regular light potting mix and it seems to be doing just fine. Not very particular in my experience. Enjoy!

I have started a lot of them from cuttings (I happened to be at a friend's house the day she was hacking back her house plants and got something like 25 cuttings from her cereuses). Most of my cereuses live on benign neglect most of the year. They can take being dried out for several months and still bounce back, shoot out strange slender limbs that can grow a foot a day and in mid summer produce several blooms per plant.
If the cutting looks shriveled give it some water with weak fertilizer (1/4 or LESS of what the directions say) and see if it does not improve in a few days.
